Rhythm Rookies is a high-energy introduction to percussion designed for our youngest drummers. In this playful, group-based class, students explore rhythm, coordination, and teamwork through hands-on percussion activities — turning the natural energy of drumming into a fun, collaborative ensemble experience.

Each week has its own playful theme, and the session builds toward a final group performance where everyone plays together.

Students Will Learn:

• Hand & Stick Basics: Students learn the essential mechanics of both hand drumming and traditional stick technique - exploring a wide palette of sounds.
  
  
• Steady Beats: We will focus on the fundamentals - keeping a steady tempo, counting simple patterns, and listening to the group.
  
  
• Ensemble Building: Your child will learn how to play with others, building a cohesive drum group that creates music together.
  
  
• Confidence Through Rhythm: Every class is designed to energize and boost confidence through call-and-response games and fun rhythm challenges.​​

The 8-Week Plan:

• Week 1 — Finding Our Heartbeat: Finding pulse and steady tempo together.
• Week 2 — Eighth Note Energy: Building speed and control (“Fast Feet & Slow Feet”).
• Week 3 — Precision & Silence: Learning to play quietly and with control (“The Secret ‘Shh’”).
• Week 4 — Cultural & World Beats: Exploring rhythms from around the world.
• Week 5 — The Magic of Three: An introduction to triplets (“Rolling Like a Pirate”).
• Week 6 — Subdivision & 16th Notes: Faster patterns and subdivision (“Super Fast Trolls”).
• Week 7 — Interaction & Ear Training: Call-and-response listening games.
• Week 8 — The Grand Drum Party: A full group performance to celebrate everything learned.

What To Bring:

Drum sticks if you've got them, water, and excitement! Drums are provided onsite.

Note: this class is for students who are potty-trained, can maintain a basic steady beat, and can stay generally attentive for an hour.

Robert Battle is a DC-based musician, educator, and community builder. As an experienced educator and host of The Pocket Open Mic, he brings deep experience in teaching, performing, and curating spaces where people can grow through music.

At 7DrumCity, Robert leads group classes that blend rhythm, creativity, and collaboration, helping students build confidence while having fun.
